Showing Love During Challenging Economic Times

  • SumoMe

Most people know someone who is going through a difficult time financially and emotionally due to the economy. They may be laid off, unemployed, or struggling in their business. One of the best ways to show love for them is to listen without judgment. Other ways to show your compassion include taking them dinner or paying one of their bills anonymously.

Listen

When most people see their loved ones struggling, their first instinct is to offer solutions. Offering solutions can be a way of showing love, but first it is important to listen to the person who is struggling without interrupting them or judging them. Your loved ones may feel that you are offering solutions because you think they are too stupid or weak to figure it out on their own. They may also feel that you are judging them and looking down upon them because of their situation. Francoise Sagan said, “Love is not just caring deeply, it’s, above all, understanding.” He stressed the importance of understanding the people we love and offering them a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on.

Take Them Dinner

People who are struggling financially will probably not want you to take them out to dinner because they feel guilty knowing that they are unable to pay their own way.  Taking them dinner or inviting them to your house for dinner is a great way to show them you care and make sure that they are well-fed at the same time. You can ask other people that know the person what their favorite meal is if you don’t know. Leaving the leftovers from dinner is a good way to make sure that the person will have an additional meal.

Pay a Bill Anonymously

Bill paying time can be especially stressful for people who are unemployed or struggling to make their business profitable. Most utility companies will allow you to make a payment on someone else’s account. They probably won’t give you the balance or any other information, but all you need to know is the name of the power company and the name of the person whose account you want to make a payment on. Mortgage companies and banks may also allow people to make a payment on someone else’s account anonymously, but they may require you to have the account number. Depositing cash in their bank account is another option. Giving money anonymously allows the person to receive the gift without affecting your relationship with that person.

These are extremely challenging economic times.  If you know someone who is being affected , let them know you care.
